Curatorial context

Presented as part of the "Antes de América en la gran pantalla. Fuentes originarias y modernidad cinematográfica" cycle, this screening features the film _Wara Wara_, originally by José María Velasco Maidana in 1930. The film uses a romantic allegory of mestizaje to unite late 19th-century literary romanticism with explorations of pre-Columbian motifs within an aesthetic bridging modernism and art deco. It notably involved artists from Bolivia's "generation of the centennial," including Arturo Borda, Marina Núñez del Prado, and Guillermo Viscarra Fabre. Considered a cinematic milestone in Bolivia, _Wara Wara_ was believed lost until its rediscovered in 1989. The current projection is a reconstruction by Fernando Vargas Villazón from 2010, based on research and interviews, as the recovered material was unedited footage.
