Curatorial context

Agony in The Garden [Agonía en el jardín] is a photographic series by Lúa Ribeira, created in collaboration with young people within the arid landscapes of central and southern Spain. Developed during the pandemic, the work aims to highlight contemporary youth movements and reflect on the present moment in relation to a remote past. Since 2021, Ribeira has captured images reflecting the hedonism and nihilism embodied in Spain's emerging trap and drill scene. The result offers an intimate encounter with individuals involved in this global, diverse cultural wave that unfolds uniquely in Spain. Employing visual research and performative collaboration as core aspects of her practice, Ribeira focuses on gestures and landscapes to evoke a particular atmosphere, shaped by her relationships with the subjects she photographs. The exhibition at Museo Lázaro Galdiano presents an extensive display of 'Agony in The Garden,' featuring Ribeira's visual constellations compiled from vernacular images, screenshots, and historical paintings, alongside her own sketches and discarded photographs. These materials introduce the exhibition, leading visitors to the core photographic works that culminate in a suspended landscape, evoking both contemporary and ancestral sensibilities. Ribeira notes her objective is to 'read between the lines, to reflect on the potential of a dominant expression of our time—often represented as performative or superficial—to explore its richness and how it relates to the current context of labor precarity, institutional violence, and the migratory, financial, and environmental crisis.'

Admission and ticket notes

Entry to the exhibition is free of charge. Visitors can access it during the museum's opening hours, Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 AM to 3 PM, at the 'La España Moderna' building. The exhibition is organized by PHotoESPAÑA.
