Curatorial context

“(Re)construcciones domésticas” is a temporary exhibition by the Basque artist Estíbaliz Sádaba, presented at the Museo Lázaro Galdiano from February 15 to April 14, 2024. The exhibition features a site-specific installation composed of photographs on various supports and a video work. These pieces aim to shed light on the historical reclusion of women in the domestic sphere and the labor they perform within it, as well as the roles society continues to assign them. Conceived for the Sala Pardo Bazán, the work is based on Sádaba's doctoral thesis and involves performative actions on female bodies, where designs inspired by Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel and the Master of Manzanillo's "The Catholic Monarchs with Saint Helena and Saint Barbara" painting are etched. The artist uses tattooing as a metaphor for indelible marks, symbolizing the "brand of the house" and the domestic space to which women have historically been relegated. The exhibition seeks to explore the evolution of the concept of "domestic space" in contrast to "public space," examining historical, religious, sociological, and cultural roots of women's confinement to understand the genesis of "domesticity." Sádaba also incorporates historical texts and domestic objects from the Museo Lázaro Galdiano's collection to create a dialogue that questions canonical narratives and encourages a renewed interpretation of historical accounts, aiming to bring the consequences of patriarchal social structures into public discourse.
