Exhibition summary

This exhibition, a collaboration between the National Anthropology Museum and the School of Art nº 10, presents contemporary fashion, graphic design, video, and photography by young artists. Inspired by rites of passage and traditional Pende ethnic costumes, it offers a modern reinterpretation of cultural practices and museum collections.

Curatorial context

Interculture: revisiones de los ritos de paso was a temporary exhibition conceived as a collaborative project between the National Anthropology Museum (MNA) and the School of Art nº 10. This initiative aimed to foster dialogue and exchange by involving young creatives in reinterpreting the museum's collections. The exhibition showcased designs in fashion, graphic design, video, and photography, all stemming from the dual inspiration of rites of passage across different cultures and two specific Pende ethnic costumes from the museum's collection that are used in such ceremonies. The project sought to bring a fresh perspective to the museum's holdings and the broader field of anthropology. By examining how students interpreted rites of passage and re-envisioned the featured costumes, the exhibition offered a contemporary and modern take on these significant cultural events. Visitors were invited to reflect on the proximity or distance between their own cultural habits and those of more distant societies, experiencing an "explosion of ideas, color, and creativity."
