This temporary exhibition, running from November 2018 to June 2019, explores the cultures of seven Himalayan kingdoms through the photographic lens of Fernando Ezquerro. It delves into the landscapes, architectures, people, and profound spirituality that define these regions, with a particular focus on Buddhism and the towering mountains.
Launched in late 2018 and extending into mid-2019, "La Morada de las Nieves" is a cultural cycle at the National Museum of Anthropology dedicated to the peoples of Central Asia, specifically the seven ancient kingdoms of the Himalayas. Guided by the narratives and striking photography of Fernando Ezquerro, the exhibition offers an immersive experience into these territories. Visitors are invited to discover the unique geography, distinctive architecture, diverse faces, and the deep spirituality that binds these societies together. The exhibition's theme is intrinsically linked to the imposing mountain range, the 'Dwelling of the Snows' in Sanskrit, which has shaped the identity, culture, and customs of its inhabitants. Recurring motifs of landscapes, architecture, people, and profound Buddhist spirituality serve as a constant thread throughout the exhibition, echoing the mantra of compassion, 'Om mani padme hum', omnipresent in the high peaks.
The exhibition is structured as a journey, with each section dedicated to a specific kingdom: Nepal, Bhutan, Ladakh, Zanskar, Mustang, Sikkim, and concluding with Tibet. The final stop, Tibet, extends a couple of weeks beyond the original schedule, offering a last opportunity for visitors to embark on this initiatory voyage to the 'roof of the world' and engage with the profound cultural tapestry woven by the majestic mountain environment.
