Exhibition summary

This temporary exhibition, 'Pilipinas ngayon. Filipinas ahora' (Philippines Now. Philippines Then.), aims to give voice to contemporary Filipino society. It contrasts the current self-definition of the Philippines with the colonial perspectives found in historical collections, featuring works by photographers Xyza Cruz Bacani and Geloy Concepcion.

Curatorial context

Fidelity to the cycle's philosophy 'Let's turn the world around,' 'Pilipinas ngayon. Filipinas ahora' seeks to provide a voice for Filipino society, contrasting its current self-definition with the colonial and past vision offered by the museum's collections, which are a 'heritage' from the 1887 General Exposition of the Philippines, Carolinas, and Marianas. This counterpoint is achieved through the collaboration of two renowned Filipino photographers, Xyza Cruz Bacani and Geloy Concepcion. Their works are integrated into the space dedicated to Filipino culture within the permanent exhibition, similar to the 'Afrotopia' project in the African cultures section. The exhibition features works printed in various formats and two audiovisual presentations where both Bacani and Concepción detail the aspects of their country's social diversity captured through their lenses. The combination of their styles—one more narrative and documentary, the other more stylized and portrait-oriented—offers a complementary, suggestive, current, and attractive vision of the Philippines in the 21st century.
