Curatorial context

The Museo del Romanticismo presents an exhibition dedicated to the groundbreaking work of Czech photographer Miroslav Tichý (1926-2011), as part of the official section of PhotoEspaña 2016. This exhibition delves into Tichý's distinctive artistic practice, where photography is intrinsically linked to the entire creative process. Visitors will see examples of cameras crafted by the artist from discarded materials, two of which are displayed, alongside his unique prints. Tichý's photographs are further characterized by his personal interventions, including drawing passe-partouts, retouching, and allowing external elements and time to act upon them, contributing to a romantic, mysterious, and painterly atmosphere. Originally a painter in the 1950s, Tichý transitioned to photography in the 1960s, retaining the sensibility of a painter and draftsman. His life was marked by a dedication to his art, often lived outside societal norms and in defiance of the communist regime, which led to periods of institutionalization. The exhibition also screens the documentary 'Tarzan retired' (2004), offering insight into how such delicate works were produced amidst personal hardship. Despite living in relative isolation in his hometown, Tichý captured the social changes of his time through his street photography, creating intimate portraits of his city and universal, timeless depictions of women in various attitudes and ages. This exhibition, a collaboration with Ivorypress, the Tichý Ocean Foundation, and the Czech Centre, celebrates his personal aesthetic and serves as an homage to women and a subtle protest against conformity.
