Exhibition summary

The exhibition 'Alteraciones' reinterprets the Gallery's collections and spaces through contemporary art, fostering dialogue between historical pieces and modern creativity. It aims to engage diverse audiences with artistic proposals that expand the presentation of contemporary art.

Curatorial context

'Alteraciones' proposes a re-reading of the collections and spaces of the Royal Collections Gallery using contemporary art to foster dialogue and feedback between historical collections and contemporary creativity. This approach aims to engage various audiences with different artistic proposals, contributing to an expansion of presentation methods, spaces, and diverse narratives surrounding contemporary art. The program has a dual purpose: to re-read history, collections, and their past, and to encourage a confluence between the typical museum-goer of historical museums and those who appreciate contemporary art. This aims to allow both groups to discover and enjoy art, history, and culture in the present. For the materialization of this project, three installations by contemporary Spanish artists are featured, directly related to the history of the royal collections or significant pieces exhibited within the Gallery's museographic discourse. The selected artists are Fernando Sánchez Castillo, with the video piece 'La expulsión de los moriscos' (2023); Asunción Molinos Gordo, with the series of frottage drawings 'Frottage' (2024) on the archaeological remains of the Madrid wall by Spanish artists of Maghrebi origin; and José Luis Alexanco, with two works, 'Aabcdd' and 'Sustitución de signos' (1978), created during the process for the Prince's Edition of the Spanish Constitution of 1978.
