Curatorial context

This exhibition centers around a crucial document from the Archivio di Stato di Roma, dated December 13, 1649. This contract, made during Diego Velázquez's second trip to Italy, outlines the specifications for bronze casts of three significant ancient sculptures: the _Villa Montalto Germanicus_, the _Caetani Satyr_, and the _Vitteleschi Discoforus_. The casts were executed by Giovanni Pietro del Duca and Cesare Sebastiani under the supervision of Juan de Córdoba, Philip IV’s agent in Rome. These sculptures were intended to adorn significant rooms in the Royal Palace of Madrid. The exhibition also touches upon subsequent commissions for bronze lions and firedogs designed by Alessandro Algardi and completed by his assistants, further illustrating the artistic and curatorial endeavors of the period. The display is part of a collaborative project involving the Archivio di Stato di Roma, Patrimonio Nacional, the Museo Nacional del Prado, and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, emphasizing the value of documentary heritage.
