Didcot Railway Centre Launches Audience Development Plan and Restores Historic Locomotives
The Great Western Society (GWS) has announced a new twin-track audience development strategy aimed at expanding visitor numbers, improving public access to its extensive collection, and broadening the reach of the 21-acre Didcot Railway Centre.
Enhancing the Visitor Experience at the Oxfordshire Living Museum
For the main season, the institution is transforming traditional static opening days into dynamic "Discovery Days." Visitors exploring the Oxfordshire site can look forward to enhanced visitor guides tailored for both adults and children, a heightened emphasis on hands-on interactive displays, and engaging short talks designed to bring historic artifacts and locomotives inside the original GWR Engine Shed to life.
Expanding Reach Through Heritage Railway Partnerships
Under the new strategic approach, the Society will continue loaning operating engines from its working fleet to other heritage railways when the locomotives are not required on-site at Didcot. Recent guest appearances—such as No. 6023 “King Edward II” visiting the Severn Valley, Torbay & Dartmouth, and Gloucestershire & Warwickshire railways, alongside No. 4144 returning from a season-long stay—have proven successful in sharing the collection with wider audiences.
According to GWS Chairman Richard Preston, this method provides a reliable revenue stream for the charity while offering supporters a more accessible experience than main line operations, which often require non-original electronic equipment and cab modifications.
With main line compatibility no longer a priority, winter work is underway to restore No. 6023 to its authentic historical condition by refitting its original cab. These ongoing efforts align with the standards of the Arts Council England Accredited Museum.
