Restoration work on the historic Locomotive No. 4079 Pendennis Castle continues to make steady headway, with recent efforts focusing heavily on cab components, vital pipework, and upcoming preparations for mainline equipment installation. Visitors and railway enthusiasts following the restoration of this iconic Great Western Railway engine can look forward to seeing several newly overhauled parts returning to their rightful places on the locomotive.
Inside the Cab and Pipework Restoration
Recent workshop activity has centered primarily on the cab, where teams have methodically worked through various controls and valves. A healthy majority of these components have now been successfully overhauled and refitted. Meanwhile, attention has also been given to the back head cladding. Although largely complete, its condition required intervention, prompting a dedicated team to begin restoring it.
Parallel to the cab restoration, significant progress has been made on the locomotive's pipework. Remaining copper, rubber, and steel elements are being systematically assessed, repaired, or replicated, and then fitted to the engine to allow for clear visual verification of progress. In addition, the first batch of newly manufactured components for the live steam feed pipes—connecting the superheater header to the cylinders—has been delivered. These are currently safely stored pending the final boiler lift, ensuring they can be precisely fitted once the boiler is repositioned.
Fundraising and Special Gathering for Supporters
Looking ahead, the upcoming months will mark the beginning of the installation process for mainline equipment. To support the final round of fundraising required for this phase, a special gathering is planned.
