Discovering History: Lady of Legend Locomotive Launch at Didcot Railway Centre
Visitors and heritage rail enthusiasts can look forward to a significant addition to the collection at Didcot Railway Centre. A newly re-created early 20th-century steam locomotive, named Lady of Legend, is set to be officially launched on Friday, April 5th, at 11 am Saint Launches on April 5th 2019. The debut introduces a faithful reconstruction of the influential Great Western Railway (GWR) Saint class to the living museum setting.
Experiencing the Legacy of GWR Engineering
The arrival of Lady of Legend fills a notable historical gap within the heritage collection. Originally introduced in 1902 under the direction of locomotive superintendent George Jackson Churchward, the Saint class marked a major shift in British rail engineering. Moving away from Victorian conventions where working parts were concealed, Churchward incorporated ideas from the United States, exposing large driving wheels, outside cylinders, and active coupling rods.
While initially considered a radical departure from traditional aesthetics, these powerful machines were designed to haul heavier modern trains equipped with dining cars, corridors, and toilets. Their efficient design and long-travel valves heavily influenced other railway companies and established a half-century of standardisation on the GWR.
What Visitors Can Expect
The reconstruction project was carried out by the Great Western Society, utilizing a later development of the class saved from a scrapyard as a donor for the boiler and frames Saint Launches on April 5th 2019.
