Honoring Decades of Locomotive Preservation
The accolade, presented at the annual Heritage Railway Association Awards, celebrates a career defined by monumental restoration and repatriation efforts. Over his 18-year tenure as Chairman, Richard played a pivotal role in securing the long-term future of the museum grounds through vital negotiations with railway property boards, protecting the historic 1932 engine shed and working coal stage.
His leadership directly shaped the operational fleet that visitors encounter today. Key projects spearheaded under his guidance include the remarkable transformation of the flagship express passenger locomotive No. 6023 "King Edward II" from scrapyard decay back to operational glory. He was also instrumental in the recreation of the "Saint" Class locomotive No. 2999 "Lady of Legend" and the meticulous renovation of the unique Great Western steam railmotor No. 93. Furthermore, his involvement in bringing the iconic No. 4079 "Pendennis Castle" back from Australia remains a cornerstone of the institution's rich heritage portfolio.
