Didcot Railway Centre has earned a prestigious national distinction, placing among the top three restoration and conservation efforts in the country at the Museums + Heritage Awards. The recognition highlights the meticulous reconstruction of the unique Great Western Railway 'Saint' Class steam engine, No. 2999 Lady of Legend.
Bringing this iconic locomotive back to life required nearly 24 years of painstaking work by a dedicated community of volunteers. The original 'Saint' class engines served as the foundational design blueprint for the Great Western Railway during the first half of the 20th century, though every single original example had been scrapped by 1953. Following its completion, 2999 returned to active tracks, representing a monumental achievement in railway preservation.
