Ultimate Picture Palace Marks 30 Years of Cinema in Oxford with a Summer-Long Celebration
A Landmark Season of Special Screenings and Local Collaborations in Oxford
Oxford’s independent single-screen cinema, the Ultimate Picture Palace (UPP), is marking a major historical milestone this summer by celebrating three decades at its current location alongside fifty years since the opening of its predecessor, the Penultimate Picture Palace. To commemorate the anniversary, the historic venue has curated an extensive programme running through June, July, and August, featuring special screenings, live events, filmmaker Q&As, and community partnerships.
The anniversary line-up nods directly to the cinema's roots. Opening night in 1996 featured Ridley Scott's sci-fi classic, which returns to the silver screen as part of the anniversary events (Blade Runner: The Final Cut celebrates the UPP’s own 30th anniversary). The season also features community-driven programming, including Pride Month events such as a screening of Saving Face, presented in partnership with the Oxford University Filmmaking Foundation.

- Food and Film Pairings: Special event screenings feature local culinary collaborations, such as pizza pairings with nearby restaurants for classic feature presentations.
- Heritage Anniversaries: July features a special 35mm screening of Winstanley to honour the golden anniversary of the original Penultimate Picture Palace, which first opened its doors in 1976.
