Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Mała Synagoga na Tłomackiem' (Little Synagogue on Tłomackie), formerly known as 'Bejt Tfila – House of Prayer', delves into the significance of the synagoge, its core objects, and the roles of its key figures like the rabbi, cantor, and shammes. Designed to be accessible to all, especially those unfamiliar with synagogal practices, the exhibition presents over thirty surviving artifacts rescued from the Holocaust, originating from Polish and German synagogues. These include ritual items such as the Aron HaKodesh (Holy Ark) and Torah scrolls, as well as everyday objects like synagogue keys. The oldest pieces date back to the 18th and the first half of the 19th century, many bearing indelible marks of their wartime experiences despite careful conservation. Where original elements are missing, such as the bima (reader's platform), they have been recreated in a modern, simple style that complements rather than competes with the historical artifacts. The exhibition is complemented by workshops for children and youth, and lectures for students, all organized by the Education Department, to explain basic concepts of Judaism and Jewish rituals and holidays. Educational aids are available, including audio recordings of Torah passages, an interactive screen for exploring the bejt tfila, and educational cards detailing the synagoge's equipment and function. Originally created in 2000 by Magdalena Sieramska and Robert Lewandowski, the exhibition space was refreshed and enhanced with new elements and educational resources for the 70th anniversary of the ŻIH.
