Exhibition summary

This is the 5th edition of the 'Basic Forms' exhibition, a contemporary art initiative focused on school environments. The program involves primary schools in Mazovia creating art pieces, including instructions, games, scores, and objects, which are then activated by students in collaboration with educators. The exhibition runs from October 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026.

Curatorial context

"Basic Forms" is a cyclical educational program for primary school students (grades 4-8) jointly organized by the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the EFC Foundation. Each year, the program features a new set of artworks—instructions, games, scores, objects, and other artistic forms—that constitute a 'dormant' exhibition. This exhibition can be 'awakened' in various forms, shaped by the children in collaboration with their teachers and the Museum's educational team. The fifth edition, running from October 1, 2025, to June 30, 2026, invites artists from Poland and abroad, including Mirosław Bałka, Neha Choksi, Alicja Czyczel, Józef Gałązka, The Vessel collective, Yuki Okumura, Philippe Parreno, Weronika Zalewska and Ewelina Węgiel, and Abbas Zahedi. The project's concept draws from 20th-century avant-garde traditions, referencing Marcel Duchamp's 'traveling exhibition' and Fluxus 'Fluxkits,' as well as On Kawara's 'Pure Consciousness' exhibition series. The artworks are packaged in specially designed boxes and distributed to selected schools in Mazovia through an open recruitment process. The program aims to foster creativity and engagement by allowing students to interpret and activate art through hands-on activities and collaborative projects.
