This exhibition explores the offerings of Warsaw bookstores in 1939, showcasing publications from the 1920s and 1930s grouped by thematic sections such as children's literature, popular science, and Polish literature. It highlights Polish book illustration and printing marks from prominent interwar publishers.
The exhibition 'Window display of a Warsaw bookstore in 1939' offers a glimpse into the intellectual and cultural landscape of pre-war Warsaw through its book offerings. Visitors can explore publications from the 1920s and 1930s, categorized thematically to include children's and youth literature, popular science and publicistic works, Polish literature and poetry, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and albums, as well as ephemera related to music. A special focus is given to Polish book illustration, featuring works by artists such as Władysław Skoczylas, Zofia Stryjeńska, Antoni Gawiński, and Apoloniusz Kędzierski. The exhibition is further enriched by a display of printing blocks for logos of significant publishers of the interwar period, including Jakub Mortkowicz, Michał Arct, Księgarnia Wojskowa, and Trzaska, Everta i Michalskiego. These printing plates are particularly valuable as they represent a distinct publishing identity that was largely lost after 1945. The exhibition draws from the collection of the Museum of Printing.
Accompanying events, including lectures and workshops, are organized to provide deeper insights into typography, bookbinding, and book architecture. These events feature experts like master typesetter Andrzej Zaborowski, typographer and book designer Andrzej Tomaszewski, and Dr. Elżbieta Pokorzyńska, a bookbinding expert. Activities range from hands-on typography and bookbinding sessions to discussions on the art of book design and graphic techniques inspired by the exhibition.
