Tracing Olympic History: Postcards at the Museum of Sport and Tourism in Warsaw

This exhibition, "Olympism on postcards from the collection of the Museum of Sport and Tourism in Warsaw," commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Polish Olympic Committee. It features approximately 500 original postcards and enlarged reproductions illustrating the history of the Olympic movement, from ancient games to modern ones up to 2012, including Polish participation and notable athletes.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Polish Olympic Committee, the Museum of Sport and Tourism in Warsaw presents "Olympism on postcards from the collection of the Museum of Sport and Tourism in Warsaw." The exhibition, which opened on July 18th, showcases around 500 original postcards and enlarged reproductions that trace the history of the Olympic movement. These visuals range from symbols of ancient games and the work of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, to the first games in Athens in 1896 and subsequent events up to 2012. The exhibition highlights Poland's Olympic journey, including its debut in Paris in 1924, the achievements of first gold medalist Halina Konopacka in Amsterdam 1928, and the triumphs of Janusz Kusociński and Stanisława Walasiewiczówna in Los Angeles 1932. A special focus is given to the unique collection of postcards from the Olympic year 1944, originating from prisoner-of-war camps in Woldenberg and Gross Born. The exhibition also touches upon art related to sport, featuring award-winning works from Olympic Art Competitions and Olympic-themed art created by children. The display concludes with a section on cities that have bid to host the Olympic Games. The exhibition was inaugurated by museum director Tomasz Jagodziński. Notable attendees at the opening included Olympic medalist Wojciech Zabłocki, who donated a postcard to the museum, and exhibition author and commissioner Barbara Mikocka. A catalog titled "Olympism on postcards" accompanies the exhibition and is available for purchase at the museum's ticket office. The exhibition is open until August 30th in the Northern Gallery of the Olympic Centre.
