Peleton: Ireneusz Chmurzyński's Cycling Art – Drawing and Painting Exhibition

Opened on September 3, 2015, 'Peleton. Ireneusz Chmurzyński – rysunek, malarstwo' delves into the essence of cycling through the artistic lens of Ireneusz Chmurzyński. The exhibition comprises archival photographs, evocative charcoal drawings, and striking large-format acrylic paintings (120x160 cm) designed to immerse viewers in the atmosphere of cycling competitions. The display begins with historical pieces, such as a portrait of Feliks Więcek, the first winner of 'Tour de Pologne', and graphics depicting legendary cyclists like Marian Więckowski. The exhibition's concept, as envisioned by the artist, invites visitors to experience the peloton from an intimate perspective, witnessing the effort, sweat, fatigue, and the gritty reality of the sport. This is achieved through spatial arrangements of artworks and fragmented views that highlight details and compositional elements of the race. The black-and-white graphics amplify the sense of struggle inherent in both victory and defeat, exemplified by a piece depicting a crash during the 'Tour de Pologne'. As the exhibition progresses, the perspective shifts outwards, moving from close-up details to a broader, more impressionistic view, allowing viewers to perceive the colorful spectacle of the 'Tour de Pologne' as observers, much like a camera operator or a sports commentator. This exhibition, which bridges art and cycling, is dedicated to Bogdan Tuszyński, a renowned sports commentator and author on cycling. Chmurzyński's work also reflects his mentorship by Tuszyński, whose encouraging words are visible on some of the graphics. 'Peleton' is intended to initiate the future Gallery of the Polish Cycling Museum, under the patronage of Czesław Lang, the director general of 'Tour de Pologne'. Lang's support has been instrumental, potentially making 'Peleton' the foundation for a gallery that will feature artworks donated by supporters of cycling. These works will be shared with institutions and individuals who promote the sport, mirroring how the 'Tour de Pologne' itself reaches various communities. Media patronage for the event was provided by TVP Sport and 'Przegląd Sportowy', with organizational partners including the Polish Olympic Committee, the Olympic Education Centre Foundation, the Polish Cycling Federation, and the Warsaw Cycling Society. The opening event at the Olympic Centre was attended by notable figures from sports journalism, cycling, and the museum's council, highlighting the significance of the exhibition.
