This exhibition explores the significant role of Jewish sports clubs in interwar Poland, highlighting themes of strength, identity, and community. It features lesser-known aspects of Jewish sporting life, showcasing clubs such as Makabi, Hapoel, Hakoah, Bar Kochba, Hasmonea, and Hagibor.
The exhibition "Siła, Tożsamość, Wspólnota. Żydowski sport w Polsce międzywojennej (1918-1939)" sheds light on a largely underappreciated aspect of Polish history: the vibrant Jewish sports scene of the Second Polish Republic. It brings to the forefront the common presence of sports clubs bearing names like Makabi, Hapoel, Hakoah, Bar Kochba, Hasmonea, and Hagibor. These organizations were not merely athletic associations but also crucial centers for fostering Jewish identity, community spirit, and national pride in a period of significant social and political change.
The exhibition details the activities and impact of these clubs, illustrating how sport served as a vehicle for physical development, social cohesion, and cultural expression within the Jewish community. Following its display at the Museum of Sport and Tourism, the exhibition is slated to tour various locations across Warsaw, Mazovia, Poland, and even Israel, where it will be presented in English and Hebrew, underscoring its international relevance. The exhibition is co-organized by the Polish Embassy in Tel Aviv and the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, indicating a collaborative effort to preserve and promote this important historical narrative.
