Curatorial context

To mark the 150th anniversary of the 'Sokół' Gymnastic Society, the Museum of Sport and Tourism in Warsaw presents "W jedności siła! - Idee Sokolstwa na pocztówkach ze zbiorów MSiT." The exhibition features 62 enlarged reproductions and around 400 original postcards from the late 19th and 20th centuries. These visuals trace the history of the 'Sokół' movement in Poland and abroad, covering its establishment under partitions, development, key figures, ideologies, symbols, gatherings, and extensive cultural and educational activities from the 19th to the 21st century. The oldest postcard displayed dates back to 1898 and depicts the 'Sokół' building in Stanisławów. The exhibition delves into various aspects of Polish 'Sokół' history, with most presented postcards dating from before 1939, complemented by those showing post-war and contemporary activities. The event was attended by numerous presidents and members of 'Sokół' societies from Poland and the Czech Republic, alongside notable guests including representatives from the Polish Embassy in Kyiv, the Polish Kayaking Association, and members of the Museum's Council. The exhibition was curated by Barbara Mikocka, a curator at the Museum of Sport and Tourism in Warsaw, and a companion catalog is available for purchase.
