Uncover Inspiring Warsaw Herstories: Women's Journeys and Emancipation at the Museum of Warsaw

This exhibition presents stories of women connected to Warsaw, drawing from the Museum of Warsaw's collection. Developed by participants of the Women's Museum Laboratory, it highlights narratives of female emancipation through symbolic and lesser-known figures.

The exhibition 'Nie miałyśmy szczęśliwej gwiazdy, zapaliłyśmy własną. Herstorie warszawskie' (We didn't have a lucky star, we lit our own. Warsaw Herstories) delves into the lives of women associated with Warsaw, utilizing the Museum of Warsaw's extensive collection. Participants from the Laboratory of the Women's Museum at the Faculty of Visual Culture Management of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw were tasked with creating narratives about female emancipation, focusing on figures that are both symbolic and, in some instances, less widely known. These 'herstories' do not form a closed narrative but rather a constellation of women's biographies, drawing evidence from official sources and private archives. Some of these women are etched into the collective memory of Warsaw's residents, while others exist solely in private recollections. Together, they evoke a starry sky, where each star shines with a unique brilliance. The exhibition features a diverse array of women: doctors, writers, educators, entrepreneurs, servants, artists, athletes, and models. They ranged from wealthy to poor, independent to subordinate, and came from various social classes, ethnic groups, and backgrounds. These women acted as caregivers, social activists, and early feminists, forming intergenerational bonds and challenging discriminatory stereotypes, often demanding what seemed impossible at the time.
