The Museum of Warsaw collects stories of Warsaw artisans, preserving traces of workshops and studios that have disappeared from the city's map. One such entity was the artistic bronze and engraving workshop of the Miecznik family, whose 74-year history mirrored the city's own. Władysław Miecznik founded the workshop in 1936. During the war, he unofficially produced Polish eagles and combat badges for the underground government and forged seals for German institutions to create counterfeit documents. The building housing the workshop and residence burned down during the Uprising, but Miecznik managed to salvage hidden tools and products from the rubble. The decision to rebuild the facility in a completely ruined city reflects the spirit of those days and the desire of Varsovians to return home, live, and work in the capital. The PRL era presented struggles with a system that aimed to nationalize crafts, yet the workshop held an almost unrivaled market position and received numerous orders. During this period, the company created sculptures, statuettes, medals, plaques, and badges. 'Miecznik's' products commemorated historical events and prominent figures, and documented the activities of offices, institutions, organizations, and associations. The Miecznik workshop's story concluded in 2010, like many artisan workshops that were supplanted by new technologies, changing fashions, and a decline in the popularity of artistic crafts. Upon closing the company, Marta and Jerzy Miecznik donated 1331 objects from their legacy to the Museum of Warsaw's collections.
