Curatorial context

This page details a special online presentation of the theatrical miniature 'Barani Kożuszek,' featuring audio description for visually impaired and blind individuals. The event was part of the 8th Culture Without Barriers Festival and took place on October 3, 2020. The performance itself tells the story of Barani Kożuszek, a beloved puppeteer from 18th-century Warsaw who operated a theatre on Miodowa Street. This miniature was commissioned by the Royal Łazienki Museum for the newly opened Waterworks pavilion and is based on Józef Ignacy Kraszewski's historical short story from 1881. The original tale centers on a beggar who staged puppet shows, using a small guillotine to decapitate puppets representing prominent figures of the Enlightenment era perceived as traitors. Contemporary accounts from 'Kurier Warszawski' in 1830 describe Barani Kożuszek as having a pleasant face, fiery eyes, and wearing rags, often singing a particular song. His theatrical endeavors ultimately led to a loss of freedom. The story and character were also immortalized in drawings by Jan Piotr Norblin.
