Curatorial context
This series of discussion workshops, "The History of Polish Insignia against the Background of Symbolism and Propaganda from the 17th to 21st Century," offers an in-depth exploration of Polish orders and decorations. Held in five sessions, each workshop includes a 30-minute lecture followed by hour-long discussions, examining these insignia within their political, symbolic, and propagandistic contexts over the last 400 years of the Republic's history. The program critically analyzes other carriers of symbolism and propaganda, such as coats of arms, banners, and flags.
The series progresses chronologically, covering Polish orders and decorations from the "For Faith, King, and Law" era up to the present Third Polish Republic. Topics include their role in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, their survival and transformation during the partitions, their re-establishment in the Second Polish Republic, their use and adaptation during the People's Republic of Poland, and their modern significance. The workshops are led by Michał Bąk, a doctoral student at the Faculty of History, University of Warsaw, with coordination by Dr. Kamil Frejlich from the Royal Łazienki Museum's Educational Department.
