Nicolas Grospierre's 'Heliograms in the Solomon Room': A Royal Łazienki Museum Exhibition Exploring Light and Memory

This exhibition features heliograms by Nicolas Grospierre, displayed in the Solomon Room at the Palace on the Isle. The works are derived from light, colour, and matter, and symbolically fill the spaces left by Marcello Bacciarelli's paintings that were destroyed during World War II.

The Royal Łazienki Museum presents a temporary exhibition in the Solomon Room at the Palace on the Isle, showcasing the heliograms of contemporary artist Nicolas Grospierre. These works are conceived as a response to the absence of Marcello Bacciarelli's original 18th-century paintings, which depicted scenes from the life of the biblical King Solomon and served as a manifesto of royal reform and aspirations for King Stanisław August. These significant paintings were completely destroyed by the Germans in 1944, leaving the gilded frames and surfaces empty. Grospierre's project invites a contemporary artistic interpretation of this historical void. His heliograms, created without a camera through the interaction of sunlight with materials, reflect 'both presence and absence, permanence and impermanence,' acting as a bridge between the physical and the metaphysical. The process itself, where the sun is the primary creator, results in unique, abstract shapes and forms. These works are deeply symbolic, drawing power from the sun and representing a dialogue between the artist and the museum's context, the historical narrative, and the very concept of art filling a space defined by loss and memory.

Admission is with the passes to the Royal Łazienki Museum facilities, which include a visit to the Palace on the Isle. Members of the Club of Friends of the Royal Łazienki Museum enter free of charge. There are free visits on Fridays. Last entry is 30 minutes before the exhibition closes.
