Curatorial context

This series of workshops, titled 'Herbatka z historią' (Tea with History), offers adults and youth (14+) a unique immersion into the 18th century. The program delves into the customs, daily life, and culinary traditions of the era, presenting them through engaging narratives about historical journeys, social rituals, and gastronomic practices. Each workshop begins with the preparation of a small, era-appropriate snack that complements the thematic discussion. The workshops are structured around specific historical themes. The session on June 9th, 'Gdzie na obiad w XVIII wieku?' (Where to dine in the 18th century?), explores the history of feasts and daily meals, their symbolic meanings, and the social aspect of dining, including information on Thursday Dinners, royal tableware, and Stanisław August's favorite dishes, culminating in the preparation of baked apples and discussion of royal chefs and the Łazienki kitchens. The second session, on June 16th, 'Osiemnastowieczna dama w podróży' (An 18th-century lady on a journey), focuses on travel as a sign of female emancipation and changing social mores, starting with an oriental snack and discussing fashionable travel destinations and the 'delightful trepidation' of female travelers. The final workshop, on June 23rd, 'Zaproszenie na osiemnastowieczną stypę' (An invitation to an 18th-century funeral feast), examines 18th-century funeral customs, where funerals were significant ceremonies often meticulously planned by the deceased. Participants will taste bread, understanding its significance at funeral feasts, and learn about the carefully orchestrated funeral ceremonies of the period. These workshops are held in the Oficyna Ermitażu, a new museum space.
