Uncovering Theatrical Illusion: "Iluzje" Workshops at the Royal Łazienki Museum

The "Iluzje" (Illusions) workshops, a collaborative effort between the Z. Raszewski Theatre Institute and the Royal Łazienki Museum, offered adults a unique opportunity to delve into the historical concept of illusion in theatre. Participants engaged creatively with theatre theorists and educators to understand how illusion functioned in the 18th century and how its principles can be creatively utilized in modern theatrical endeavors. The workshops focused on techniques used in 18th-century theatre to influence the audience's imagination. Attendees learned about methods of imitating reality through stage devices, elaborate scenery, and auditorium design. Analyzing elements such as the depiction of spirits, participants discovered the role of lighting in constructing theatrical simulations. The sessions also sought to address the significance of acting in building illusion, referred to in old Polish as "omamienie" (delusion or deception).
