Exhibition summary

This workshop offered adults a chance to explore the art of marbled paper, inspired by cosmic nebulae, and learn about its historical significance in bookbinding. Participants created abstract patterns on paper and visited the Myślewicki Palace.

Curatorial context

The 'Kosmiczne marmurki' (Cosmic Marbling) workshop invited adults to discover the techniques behind marbled paper, often resembling cosmic nebulae, and to create their own abstract designs. This hands-on activity was combined with a visit to the Myślewicki Palace and a lecture on the 'Traveling Library of Mrs. Batowska.' The workshop delved into the principles of marbling, integrating creative activities, art therapy, and lessons in cultural and art history, drawing inspiration from the museum's collections. Marbled papers were popular from the 17th to the late 19th century, used to signify the authenticity of documents and the uniqueness of books. Each endpaper was a distinct pattern created using various tools and substances like turpentine, alum, and ox gall. The popularity of hand-marbled endpapers waned by the end of the 19th century with the advent of mass book production, which led to printed marbled patterns. Today, marbled papers are primarily recognized for their use on book covers and as endpapers.
