The exhibition "Mattia Preti. Discovering the Baroque Secrets of Malta" delves into the artistic legacy of Mattia Preti (1613–1699), an eminent Italian painter of the mature Baroque period, known for his fusion of Caravaggio's luminism and the rich coloring of Titian and Veronese. Settling in Malta in 1661, where he became a Knight of Malta, Preti spent nearly four decades creating significant works. The exhibition provides a historical overview of Malta and features examples of Maltese handicrafts before focusing on Preti's career. It presents his early Italian works and the core of the exhibition, which includes several paintings commissioned by the Order of Malta, such as 'Lot and his Daughters' and 'The young St. John the Baptist Wearing the Red Tabard of the Order of St. John'. Visitors can also explore Preti's achievements as a frescoist, notably his series on the life and martyrdom of St. John the Baptist in the Cathedral of St. John in Valletta, brought to life through an installation with replicas.
