The Solar Clock "Imieninowy": A Historic Royal Łazienki Museum Exhibition of 18th-Century Ornamental Architecture and Timekeeping

This unique solar clock, known as "Imieninowy," was installed in 1786 near the fountain on the south terrace of the Palace on the Isle. It features a round Carrara marble plate with an engraved gnomonic chart and a commemorative inscription, including the monogram of Stanisław August.

The "Imieninowy" Solar Clock is a notable historical artifact located on the south terrace of the Palace on the Isle in the Royal Łazienki Museum. Installed in 1786, its placement was personally chosen by King Stanisław August to commemorate his name day, celebrated on May 8th. The clock itself consists of a circular plate made of white Carrara marble, resting on a sandstone column fragment. Intricately engraved on the marble is a gnomonic chart, which functions to indicate the hours of the day based on the sun's position. Below this chart, a commemorative inscription is carved, prominently featuring a monogram formed by the initial letters of the Latin version of the King's name, "Stanislaus Augustus Rex." This detail underscores its personal connection to the monarch. A similar sundial, dating from 1863, can also be found in the Saxon Garden in Warsaw.
