Curatorial context

The workshop 'Solarigraphy, or How to Catch the Sun' offers an immersive introduction to a unique photographic technique that allows for the capture of the sun's movement over extended periods, from days to months. Using basic materials such as light-sensitive paper and a small film canister or box, participants will explore how to create 'sun-painted' images that reveal the usually imperceptible passage of time. The session is led by Marcin Kulikowski, who shares his expertise and the joy derived from this accessible art form. Attendees will construct their own solarigraphy camera during the workshop and receive instructions on how to replicate the process independently at home. The resulting cameras can be left to expose at the Łazienki Królewskie, with the developed photographs later to be exhibited at the Ecological Education Center. This workshop is part of an educational program for the exhibition 'Splendor of Power. The Witts on the Throne of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.' The sun, a universal symbol of light, warmth, and the cycles of nature, has historically been used to signify the grandeur and splendor of rulers. This thematic connection highlights how solar motifs were employed in the modern era to emphasize royal magnificence, exemplified by Louis XIV, the 'Sun King,' and similarly referenced in Polish-Lithuanian contexts, such as the description of the death of Augustus II as the 'mortal sunset of the Most Serene Sun.'
