Curatorial context

The 'Sketches for Paintings' course, held virtually from February to April 2021, invited participants aged 16 and above to create their own painting sketchbooks, drawing inspiration from the rich artistic heritage of the Royal Łazienki Museum. The program aimed to deepen participants' artistic sensitivity, introduce them to the world of painting, and enrich their artistic portfolios. Throughout the eight sessions, attendees explored favourite paintings, created painterly notes for creative work, and sought inspiration in Stanisław August's collection and the historic Łazienki grounds. The course delved into the stories behind royal paintings, animational activities enhanced knowledge of painting canons and historical context, and participants learned workshop principles practiced in royal ateliers. They explored paint application, brushwork, and the properties of different paints, culminating in personal sketches within a provided sketchbook. The course emphasized that historical art can still be relevant and inspiring. Each participant received a parcel with necessary materials, including a set of "White Nights" watercolors, a watercolor sketchbook, Renesans brushes, a ceramic palette, and black paper. The curriculum was structured around weekly themes, such as "The Painter's Studio," "Still Life," "Genre Scenes," "Night Pieces," "Garden Landscapes," "Order and Chaos," and "Portraiture," encouraging participants to engage with art historical examples and develop their own artistic interpretations. The course was led by Zofia Zaccaria, a painter, graphic artist, and illustrator with extensive experience in museum education.
