Exhibition summary

The royal bedroom of King Stanisław August in the Palace on the Isle has undergone a complete revitalization, returning it to its 18th-century splendor. Visitors can now see the restored historical furniture, including the king's bed with a canopy, and intricately decorated silk wall panels and curtains.

Curatorial context

The private bedroom of King Stanisław August, located on the first floor of the Palace on the Isle, has been fully restored. Conservationists meticulously recreated the 18th-century wall panels using custom-made silk damask from Lyon, featuring a 'large Chinese tree' motif. The royal furniture ensemble, including a sofa, armchair, and the king's bed with its canopy, has also been conserved. The reconstruction of the bed was based on archival materials, iconography, and surviving examples from 1775-1790, drawing inspiration from luxurious French palace beds, such as those in Marie Antoinette's chambers at Versailles. Archival records describe the royal bed as a wall-mounted piece with a canopy and curtains in the king's private quarters. Further archival research and comparative analyses informed the restoration of missing furniture elements, from silk upholstery and passementerie to the complete canopy above the royal bed, also made with Lyon silk and Louis XVI-style passementerie handcrafted by the Declercq manufactory. The final touches included the addition of curtains, curtain rods, and hooks. These revitalization works were conducted between 2014-2016 as part of the larger revitalization project of the Palace on the Isle, supported by EU funds and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
