This exhibition explores the theatrical tastes of Poland's last king, Stanisław August, and their lasting impact on the national stage. Co-organized by the Theatre Museum of the Grand Theatre – National Opera, it showcases costumes, set designs, props, and memorabilia from the museum's collection.
The exhibition "On the Royal Stage. Stanisław August's Theatrical Canon," presented at the Royal Łazienki Park, delves into the artistic fascinations of Poland's final monarch and their enduring legacy in Polish theatre. The display features significant artifacts from the Theatre Museum's holdings, focusing on the works of four eminent European playwrights: Sophocles, William Shakespeare, Molière, and Jean Racine, whose portraits the king himself commissioned for his court theatres. This selection reflects his aesthetic preferences and belief in the importance of classic repertoire for cultural development.
The exhibition highlights how these royal inspirations have been deeply embedded in the history of Polish theatre. Visitors can expect to see memorabilia associated with prominent figures of the Polish stage, including Mieczysława Ćwiklińska, Jacek Woszczerowicz, and Adam Hanuszkiewicz, as well as renowned set designers such as Karol Frycz, Teresa Roszkowska, Tadeusz Kantor, Krzysztof Pankiewicz, and Marian Kołodziej. The presented costumes, set designs, and historical mementos from various eras illuminate selected Polish productions of these playwrights, simultaneously referencing King Stanisław August's own aesthetic and theatrical passions. The exhibition was prepared in conjunction with the inauguration of the Łazienki Amphitheatre following its comprehensive conservation renovation.
