Unique Hatching at Artis Zoo: Male Griffon Vulture Pair Welcomes Chick in Amsterdam
Artis Zoo in Amsterdam recently announced the successful hatching of a griffon vulture chick, cared for by a unique male pair. The two male griffon vultures, who have been together since 2018, have successfully raised their first chick, which hatched in March.
Griffon vultures are known for their monogamous bonds and shared incubation responsibilities. When an egg from another pair was not being consistently incubated, it was entrusted to the male duo. Keepers at Artis have observed the male parents diligently taking turns caring for the chick, expressing satisfaction with their nurturing efforts.
Observing Animal Behavior at Artis
This unique family unit provides a visible example of diverse behaviors observed across the animal kingdom. Artis has long highlighted the spectrum of sexual diversity within its animal populations, sharing these insights with visitors for over three decades.
Artis's Role in Griffon Vulture Conservation
This hatching also plays a part in broader conservation initiatives. Artis actively supports the LIFE Safe for Vultures project in Sardinia, having previously released eight vultures into the wild as part of these efforts. The new chick could potentially contribute to future conservation releases. Visitors can learn more about the species and its importance at Artis here.
