Exploring Diversity in Nature: Artis Amsterdam Launches WorldPride Kids Events

From Saturday, 25 July to Saturday, 8 August, Artis Amsterdam Royal Zoo is hosting a dedicated family program in celebration of WorldPride. The seasonal lineup is designed to help children and their families explore how diversity is a fundamental, natural element of the wild world.

What Families Can Experience at Artis Amsterdam During WorldPride

The main attraction of the holiday program is the Natural Heroes Expedition, a collaborative initiative developed alongside the Natural Hero Foundation. Inspired by characters from children's books by Edward van de Vendel and Floris Dorgelo, the self-guided trail guides young visitors through the park. Along the way, children complete challenges to collect seven distinct "hero powers," each highlighting unique traits that show how every individual can be a hero in their own way.

Alongside the expedition, the park is hosting daily hands-on creative activities. Children can participate in a silent disco where they learn to dance like Japanese cranes, paint their own colorful self-portraits, or work with others to build a collaborative art piece representing an Earthly Paradise. Visitors can find the schedule of activities on the official program page.

Guided Tours and Inclusive Education Events

The programming also extends to educators and adult visitors with targeted events. On Wednesday, 29 July, Artis will partner with the advocacy organization COC to host the "Teach with Pride" conference. This event invites education professionals from primary, secondary, and vocational schools to share insights and discuss strategies for fostering more inclusive school environments.

For adults, the park has developed a specialized themed tour focusing on the diverse forms of partnership, reproduction, and family structures found throughout the animal kingdom. Additionally, on Thursday, 4 August, retired Artis biologist Charlotte Vermeulen and comedian Maya van As will host an interactive theater lecture, blending scientific insight with storytelling to examine sexual diversity in nature.

The Science Behind Variation in the Wild

According to Artis biologist Noa Hudepol, biological diversity is a core strength that helps species adapt and thrive. By observing these varied behaviors and structures in the animal world, young visitors can learn that differences are entirely natural and that there is no single definition of "normal." The programming aims to create an open space where children feel free to embrace their own individuality.

Whether you are attending these special seasonal events or exploring the historic park grounds, planning your journey is straightforward.
