Artis Zoo in Amsterdam Welcomes Red Pandas and Otters to Transformed Rock Enclosure
Visitors to Artis Zoo in Amsterdam can now observe two new animal species in a specially renovated habitat. The iconic Rock, a well-known feature of the zoo, has been completely transformed to house small-clawed otters and, as of recently, endangered red pandas. This new environment is designed to support the natural behaviors of these fascinating animals.
A Transformed Habitat for Endangered Species in Amsterdam
The modernist Rock, originally built in 1966, has undergone significant changes. What was formerly known as the Monkey Rock has been reimagined as a lush green island. Landscape architect Thijs de Zeeuw led the design, creating a space that integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings.
The renovated enclosure now features a water landscape with boulders, aquatic plants, and dead wood, specifically tailored for the small-clawed otters, who have resided there since May. For the red pandas, a central dead tree connects to the crowns of surrounding trees, allowing them to climb and exhibit their natural agility. This design enables both species to explore their habitat fully and choose when to be visible to visitors.
Supporting Global Conservation Efforts
The arrival of the red panda is particularly significant given its status as an endangered species. Conservationists estimate that only between 2,500 and 10,000 red pandas remain in the wild, primarily due to habitat loss and deforestation. Artis Zoo participates in the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), a vital initiative aimed at protecting these vulnerable animals.
In addition to housing red pandas as part of the EEP, Artis actively contributes to the Forest Guardian Programme in north-eastern Nepal. This program works to support wild red panda populations, underscoring Artis's commitment to broader wildlife conservation efforts. Visitors can discover more about the red panda at Artis and learn about these important initiatives.
Discovering unique wildlife and learning about global conservation efforts is a key part of the experience at Artis.
