Fabrique des Lumières in Amsterdam Presents 'The Realm of the Pharaohs: An Immersive Journey Through Ancient Egypt'
Amsterdam's Fabrique des Lumières is set to unveil a new immersive exhibition, "The Realm of the Pharaohs: An Immersive Journey Through Ancient Egypt," beginning March 14, 2025. This experience invites visitors to delve into the ancient civilization of Egypt, known for its iconic pharaohs, monumental pyramids, and unique cultural practices. The exhibition will feature imagery of artifacts from global museum collections and utilize vivid reconstructions from the video game series Assassin's Creed to bring this rich history to life.
Exploring Ancient Egypt Through Digital Art
The main exhibition spans over three millennia of Egyptian history. It guides visitors along the banks of the Nile, the vital artery of ancient Egypt that shaped its regions, seasons, and central role in trade, agriculture, and religion. The journey then continues to the Pyramids of Giza, constructed over 4,000 years ago for Pharaohs Khufu (Cheops), Khafre, and Menkaure. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the sole remaining Ancient World Wonder, stands alongside the other pyramids, guarded by the Sphinx, continuing to captivate audiences.
Another key aspect of the exhibition explores the lives of the pharaohs, from Narmer, who unified Upper and Lower Egypt, to Ramses II, renowned for the Battle of Kadesh. Their narratives are presented through monumental sculptures and royal treasures. Visitors will also encounter the temples of Abu Simbel, commissioned by Ramses II to honor himself and his wife, Nefertari. A segment of the exhibition also explores the afterlife, a fundamental element of ancient Egyptian culture, illustrated by the Book of the Dead, a guide for the soul's journey through the underworld.
Bringing History to Life: Artifacts and Reconstructions
To vividly portray this ancient civilization, the exhibition merges images of archaeological discoveries with digital reconstructions. It digitally unites images of artifacts from prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Additionally, the experience incorporates realistic depictions from Ubisoft's popular Assassin's Creed video game series. These visuals offer detailed insights into sites like the Pyramids and Sphinx of Giza and the Karnak Temple complex, showcasing how they might have appeared millennia ago. The Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden also contributed as a knowledge partner for the exhibition.
Additional Immersive Experiences
Alongside 'The Realm of the Pharaohs,' two shorter exhibitions will also open on March 14:
French Orientalist Painters: Ingres, Delacroix, Gérôme
This exhibition highlights the works of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Eugène Delacroix, and Jean-Léon Gérôme, showcasing their distinct interpretations of 'the Orient' in their art.
Foreign Nature by Julius Horsthuis
Designed by Dutch digital artist Julius Horsthuis, "Foreign Nature" fuses art and mathematics. It transports viewers through angular, industrial landscapes that gradually transform into otherworldly realms filled with organic forms.
