Fabrique des Lumières in Amsterdam Presents New Immersive Show: 'The Sea, Dive into the Magical Depths'
Amsterdam's Fabrique des Lumières is set to transport visitors on an extraordinary journey beneath the waves with its latest immersive exhibition, "De Zee, Duik in de Magische Diepte" (The Sea, Dive into the Magical Depths). Launching on April 25th, this new experience invites all ages to explore the hidden wonders of the ocean, bringing the magic of underwater worlds directly to the Westergasterrein venue.
An Immersive Journey into the Ocean's Depths
This expansive new show, specifically timed for the upcoming May holiday, promises a vibrant adventure through diverse marine ecosystems. Visitors will encounter over a hundred species of underwater flora and fauna, from lively coral reefs and mysterious deep-sea caves to ancient shipwrecks and bustling schools of tropical fish. Utilizing advanced audio and video technologies, the exhibition creates a sensation of being fully submerged, offering an intimate perspective on marine life.
Encountering Marine Life Up Close
The experience allows for breathtaking encounters with life-sized sea mammals, rare deep-sea inhabitants, and dynamic schools of fish. Guests can witness colossal blue whales, orcas, and sperm whales gliding through the digital waters. Every intricate detail and vibrant color of the underwater world is rendered to scale, showcasing the richness of the ocean's biodiversity. The journey unfolds through scenes of penguins on ice, exotic seahorses, and bioluminescent jellyfish, leading to the profound darkness of the deepest waters. Beyond its visual spectacle, the show subtly highlights the human impact on marine environments, including deep-sea fish, encouraging a deeper reflection on the oceans' vastness and vulnerability.
A Cinematographic Underwater Experience
The creation of "De Zee, Duik in de Magische Diepte" involved nearly a year of dedicated work, incorporating over 800 video recordings of more than 100 different underwater species. These visuals are precisely mapped onto Fabrique des Lumières' impressive 5,600 square meter projection surface at the Westergasterrein. Complementing the stunning visuals, the show’s soundtrack plays a crucial role, blending authentic ocean and animal sounds with renowned film scores. Iconic musical cues, like the theme from the 1964 James Bond film "Goldfinger," accompany dramatic scenes, such as the appearance of a giant octopus, while luminous jellyfish pulsate in rhythm with the music, enhancing the atmospheric immersion.
Advocating for Ocean Protection with Greenpeace
Fabrique des Lumières has partnered with Greenpeace for "De Zee, Duik in de Magische Diepte" to raise awareness about the critical need for healthy oceans and their protection. This collaboration includes the development of an additional short immersive experience focusing on the deep sea, which will be featured in the Studio, an interactive space within Fabrique des Lumières, starting in June. Furthermore, various activities focused on ocean conservation will be held throughout the year. Visitors purchasing tickets will also have the option to make a voluntary donation to Greenpeace.
Marieke Vellekoop, Director of Greenpeace Netherlands, emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating that the deep sea, one of Earth's last untouched ecosystems, faces significant threats from deep-sea mining, pollution, overfishing, and climate change. She highlighted the partnership with Fabrique des Lumières as a valuable platform to bring this critical message to a wider audience.
