Madame Tussauds Amsterdam Honors Johan Cruijff with New Wax Figure
Madame Tussauds Amsterdam recently unveiled a new wax figure of legendary Dutch footballer Johan Cruijff. This special addition was presented on April 25, 2022, in commemoration of what would have been his 75th birthday. It marks the third time the interactive museum has created a likeness of Cruijff, considered one of the greatest football players of all time. Susila Cruijff, his daughter, revealed the figure and its interactive display to visitors.
The new statue depicts Johan Cruijff in his prime as a player and captain of the Dutch national team during the 1970s. Dressed in the iconic 1974 World Cup kit, the figure is part of an interactive setup where guests can digitally "try on" some of his famous club career shirts. This detailed portrayal was developed through a close collaboration with The World of Cruijff.
Bringing the legendary footballer to life required a dedicated team of 25 specialists who worked for approximately nine months. Due to Cruijff having posed for his second figure in 1992, sculptors were able to utilize many of the original measurements from that time. Extensive research was also conducted, and the Cruijff family provided input throughout the process to ensure a precise likeness.
Susila Cruijff shared her reaction upon seeing the completed work, noting how impactful it was to see her father depicted younger than her current age. She described the experience as quite striking, emphasizing the incredibly lifelike appearance of the hair, skin, and eyes, and feeling as though he was looking directly at her.
Experiencing Sporting History at Madame Tussauds Amsterdam
Johan Cruijff, born Hendrik Johannes Cruijff in Amsterdam on April 25, 1947, and passed away in Barcelona on March 24, 2016, left an indelible mark on football. He won the prestigious Ballon d'Or three times (in 1971, 1973, and 1974) and was a pivotal figure in the development of the "Total Football" philosophy. His achievements led to his widespread recognition as one of history's premier footballers, culminating in his election as European Player of the Century in 1999.
Beyond his playing career, Cruijff found significant success as a coach for both Ajax and FC Barcelona after retiring as a player in 1984. His enduring legacy also includes the establishment of several foundations and initiatives, such as the Cruyff Foundation, Cruyff Institute, Cruyff Classics, Cruyff Football, and Cruyff Library, all dedicated to sport and education. Visitors to Madame Tussauds Amsterdam can now see this tribute to a true sporting icon.
