Foam delves into the distinctive archive of the Dutch duo Blommers & Schumm with 'Mid-Air,' a profound look back at more than 25 years of their playful and provocative image experimentation. The exhibition features highlights from their impressive career, including iconic photographs published in prominent magazines such as Fantastic Man, The Gentlewoman, Dazed & Confused, Self Service, Purple, AnOther Magazine, and The New York Times Magazine.
Anuschka Blommers and Niels Schumm, who met at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, began collaborating shortly after graduating in 1997. They have since become leading figures in international fashion photography, known for their innovative blurring of boundaries between autonomous art and commercial imagery. What initially appear to be calm, perfectly composed images are, upon closer inspection, moments that could never exist so still and polished in real life: a falling glass, a collage of objects forming a face—where a minimal shift would unbalance the entire image. What appears digitally manipulated today was fully realized in front of the camera by Blommers & Schumm, precisely for that one decisive moment the photo was taken. Blommers & Schumm have developed a completely unique visual language—conceptually layered and aesthetically surprising. By challenging the conventions of fashion photography and embracing the unexpected, their work invites the viewer to look differently and see anew. This overview exhibition offers a rare glimpse into their ever-changing world, where precision and playfulness effortlessly converge and nothing is as it seems.
