Exhibition summary

Foam presents an exhibition of works by American artist Daniel Gordon, winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award 2014. The exhibition showcases colorful portraits and still lifes created between 2010 and 2014, highlighting Gordon's unique process of reconstructing found internet imagery into three-dimensional collages.

Curatorial context

The exhibition at Foam focuses on the work of Daniel Gordon, an American artist recognized with the Foam Paul Huf Award in 2014. Gordon's artistic practice is fundamentally rooted in re-use, where he sources photographic images from the internet, prints them, and assembles them into three-dimensional tableaus using scissors and glue. These collages are then photographed with an 8x10-inch view camera. The resulting artworks feature a selection of vibrant portraits and still lifes created between 2010 and 2014. The jury recognized Gordon's unique method of reconstructing found imagery into tangible forms, which expands upon the history of photography, collage, and appropriation. His work also alludes to traditional genres such as the painted portrait and still life, referencing artists like Arcimboldo and Matisse. By melding fragmented parts and diverse histories, Gordon creates a dislocated, contemporary reality where multiple perspectives and figures merge into a single, cohesive composition.
