Curatorial context

Foam proudly presents an extensive overview of the work of South African photographer Ernest Cole, with a particular focus on his seminal project 'House of Bondage.' Cole is celebrated for his relentless documentation of Black lives in South Africa during the oppressive apartheid regime. As one of the first Black freelance photographers, Cole provided an unprecedented, inside view of a system of institutionalized racial segregation. Born in a township, he personally experienced the strains of apartheid and, by having himself reclassified from ‘black’ to ‘coloured’, gained access to restricted areas, risking his life to expose the grim realities of segregation through his lens. This exhibition is particularly significant as it incorporates parts of his archive, which was long believed lost until its rediscovery in 2017 in safety deposit boxes at a Swedish bank. The retrieved collection includes 60,000 negatives and contact sheets. Alongside (colour) images from his time in America, the archive contains unpublished photographs and contact sheets related to 'House of Bondage.' This presentation at Foam marks the first large-scale overview of Cole’s work to feature these crucial retrieved materials, offering a profound look into his artistic legacy and the historical period he meticulously documented.
