Curatorial context
Hiền Hoàng, the recipient of the 18th Foam Paul Huf Award, presents her solo exhibition 'Garden of Entanglement' at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam. This multidisciplinary exhibition invites a multi-sensory reflection on the intricate connections between humans and nature. Hoàng's practice, deeply influenced by collaborations with scientists and technologists, reveals the ambivalent role of technology as both a tool for understanding the natural world and a force that distances us from it.
The exhibition showcases three recent projects: the eponymous 'Garden of Entanglement,' which investigates the hidden vibrational life of trees and their response to the environment through motion and sound, positioning trees as witnesses to global exchange; 'Scent from Heaven,' exploring the paradoxical relationship between suffering and transformation through the Agarwood tree, where beauty and value arise from destruction; and 'Across the Ocean,' which delves into human experiences, particularly the artist's aunt's migration from Vietnam to Germany, using food as a lens to examine identity, memory, and cultural stereotypes while questioning how perceptions are formed and distorted.
Hiền Hoàng (b. 1990) is a Vietnamese-born, Hamburg-based multimedia artist whose work sits at the intersection of human memory, nature, and technology. Her ability to blend ecological narratives with innovative, data-driven artistic approaches earned her the prestigious Foam Paul Huf Award in 2024. The exhibition can be seen from June 6 to September 10, 2025.
