Curatorial context

Foam presents 'Matter,' an exhibition of new three-dimensional works by Japanese artist Daisuke Yokota. This exhibition centers on the tactile and material aspects of photography, moving beyond the camera to explore the physical forms of the medium itself. Three installations are featured, with one involving an enlarged, directly exposed film roll draped across the exhibition room and waxed on site. Another installation projects outcomes from unorthodox darkroom experiments onto walls, with a printer slowly rendering chemical distortions of negatives. Yokota's latest work, 'Matter / Burn Out,' documented the artist setting fire to his own installation prints in China, with the resulting burnt material forming the basis of the 'Matter / Vomit' installation. This piece critically reflects on the daily overflow of images in the information society and the limitations of our collective memory. Yokota, a winner of the Foam Paul Huf Award in 2016, is known for his experimental approach to photography, pushing the medium and its perception into original directions, harking back to the Provoke generation's tradition of intuitive experimentation.
