This exhibition pays tribute to the courageous and committed women of Amsterdam West and their often-unseen contributions to the community. Featuring a series of portraits by photographer Hanane El Ouardani alongside collected personal memories, photographs, and documents, it aims to create a fairer and more complete picture of the city's history.
For centuries, women in Amsterdam West have been instrumental in building their community, whether through supporting neighbors, creating safe spaces, or leading union strikes and advocating against inequality. Their vital contributions are often overlooked. This exhibition, a collaboration between the district of Amsterdam West, the Amsterdam City Archives, and Foam Photography Museum Amsterdam, aims to change that by bringing these stories to light. Photographer Hanane El Ouardani has created a series of portraits capturing the strength and determination of these women, which are presented alongside collected materials from an open call. These materials, including personal memories, photographs, and documents, will become part of the City Archives, ensuring these narratives are preserved for future generations. The exhibition seeks to present a fairer and more complete picture of Amsterdam, honoring the women who are an inextricable part of its story.
