Exhibition summary

Foam presents 'Tomorrow of Yesterday,' an exhibition by Stefanie Moshammer, exploring the duality of the Haitian island Île-à-Vache. Moshammer's work contrasts the picturesque Caribbean scenery with the pervasive presence of litter and waste, questioning Western ideals of paradise against the daily lives of its inhabitants.

Curatorial context

The exhibition 'Tomorrow of Yesterday' at Foam features the work of Stefanie Moshammer, focusing on her research into the Haitian island of Île-à-Vache. Moshammer visited the island in 2016 and 2017, capturing images that appear idyllic at first glance, reminiscent of stock photographs of waving palms and white beaches. However, her series also reveals the unfulfilled promises of the location, highlighting how the beautiful surroundings of the deep blue ocean, vibrant nature, and colorful streets are juxtaposed with litter and waste, including plastic bottles, bags, and polystyrene wrappings. Through this visual dialogue, Moshammer's work delves into notions of paradise, examining the gap between Western ideals, past promises, and the lived experiences of the island's residents. Stefanie Moshammer (b. 1988, Austria) is an artist whose work in graphic design and photography has been exhibited internationally and published in various magazines. Her first photobook, 'Vegas and She,' was released in 2015, and her work has been featured in Foam Magazine and the traveling exhibition 'Foam Talent.' The exhibition is supported by the Florentine Riem Vis Grant, established to aid young photographic talents, and made possible with support from the Gieskes-Strijbis Fund and the Van Bijlevelt Foundation. The prints are produced by Kleurgamma.
