Curatorial context

The solo exhibition 'War is Personal' by Ukrainian photojournalist and documentary filmmaker Julia Kochetova brings visitors close to life on the front lines, exploring the fragile boundary between documenting, mourning, and surviving. Kochetova, part of a generation directly affected by the war in Ukraine, documents it from within, moving beyond statistics to reveal the deeply personal nature of conflict. Her images illustrate how war permeates the home, the body, and the language of those affected, functioning as a visual diary that offers an intimate portrait of everyday life in a country at war. This exhibition is an invitation to restore empathy in a time when images of violence have become normalized. 'War is Personal' is part of Foam’s research trajectory 'The Camera as a Weapon,' which questions the role of photography in times of conflict. Kochetova's practice, alongside other featured artists, explores how the camera can be used not only to document but also to defend and confront. Julia Kochetova (b. 1993) is an award-winning photojournalist whose work has appeared in major international publications and has focused on firsthand storytelling rooted in personal experience since 2013, documenting significant events in Ukraine.
